NewsCONGRATULATIONS Lady Cougars Basketball Team * 3 – Peat * District 11 Champions HELP HAITI
Merritt
Island Christian School’s elementary students have supported a Haitian girl,
Norvin Gracillia, for the past 10 years. The elementary chapel has paid her
support money, $38 a month, through Compassion International. Norvin lives
approximately 150 miles north of where the earthquake hit, but she will still
be negatively affected by the ramifications of this tragic event. If you feel
led to assist the earthquake victims of Haiti, please click the link HELP
HAITI and donate what you can. Compassion International is a trusted,
Christian organization, sanctioned by the Association of Christian Schools
International. Excerpt from “We Pray for Children” We pray for children whose nightmares come in the daytime, who will eat anything, who have never seen a dentist, who aren’t spoiled by anybody, who go to bed hungry and cry themselves to sleep, who live and move, but have no being. We pray for children who want to be carried, and for those who must, for those we never give up on and for those who don’t have a second chance. For those we smother…and for those who will grab the hand of anybody kind enough to offer it. -Hughs
MICS TEACHER IS SELECTED AS ACSI TEACHER OF THE YEAR Congratulations to MICS Art/Photography Teacher Wendy Fisher for being chosen as the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) Teacher of the Year! Fisher has taught at MICS for the past 14 years and was chosen by her peers as MICS Teacher of the Year for the 2008-2009 school year. Once she received that honor, Secondary Principal Toni Gartrell encouraged Fisher to apply for the ACSI Teacher of the Year. The process was not a quick one, as Fisher was asked to complete a very lengthy application and obtain letters of recommendation from students, parents and fellow teachers. Fisher’s hard work paid off when it was announced at the Florida Region ACSI Convention that she had been chosen for this top honor. Although there was a lot of work involved in the process of being considered for this award, Fisher was touched by the many kind words sent on her behalf from former students and parents. She has touched the lives of many of her students. “The best part of the process was the letter of recommendations that I received and got to read,” Fisher said. Four of Fisher’s former students, Class of 2006 graduate Jeremy Brogdon, Class of 2007 alumni Sarah Peters and Tom Sanders and Class of 2008 graduate Andrew Murdoch are all attending Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah, Ga. Three of the four received sizeable scholarships in which Fisher played a huge role. Fisher also received a recommendation letter from Class of 2008 graduate Megan McSwain who is presently studying photography at Carson Newman College in Tenn. and has traveled to Africa, Guatemala and India where she took pictures of the people of those countries to help others understand the mission field. McSwain’s parents, Joe and Daphne also sent in letters praising Fisher’s influence on both Megan and their daughter Sarah who is a Class of 2005 graduate. Other former students of Fisher include Aimee Anderson, Class of 2001 who is teaching art in Titusville, Fla., and Annette Eberly who is also teaching art at Rockledge Christian School. Last year’s Class of 2009 graduate Kirsten Brown is attending Baylor University in Texas studying photography. “This is my greatest accomplishment! I am so honored to have been an influence in these student's lives,” Fisher said.
